Greetings and Salutations to you all!

I would first like to say that my hat is tipped off to all of you fantastic artists who are taking part in the Trading Post, and our new art challenge, Squiggles! There is a significant uprise in people taking part, and it warms the cockles of my heart to see so much fun and creativity on our forums!

I would like to propose another activity, one that encourages creative thinking in the ways of color - a coloring book thread!

Here's how it works:

1. Artists post lineart to the thread. The lineart should be relatively crisp, black and white, and it's best if the piece is something that is open to color interpretation(i.e., it may be best to not post linework of your personal character, unless you do not mind them being coloured any manner of ways!)

2. Artists can pick and choose lineart they like, and colour it in! Use your creative imaginations to come up with interesting, eye-pleasing colour combinations, or experiment with a technique you've always wanted to try. Your choice! The sky is the limit.

3. If you choose to colour a piece, or five, please contribute some lineart as well! The aim is to have a broad pool of lineart that artists can choose from!

4. Of course, post your finished results in this thread!

That should be everything! Oh, except for one thing - please remember, ladies and gentlemen, if you choose to post the finished coloured works outside of this thread, it is well advised to contact the original inker to ask permission, and to give them proper credit(and yourself, as they are collaborations!).

Happy coloring everyone!

Here's something tiny for folks who want a warm up before tackling a larger piece. Butterfly gives you about a million and one possible color options.

Yes, the preview image is about the same size as the full size. Consider it the coloring equivalent of stretching before a real workout. :)

Oh, what fantastic submissions so far! I would love to see more of these pieces in full color! Mauricia's is just superb.

It came to my attention that not everyone might know how to digitally color these pieces. In the case of traditional, one just prints out the lineart, hand-colors it, and scans it in. But what about the digital folks? Here's a simple trick. It works with Photoshop, OpenCanvas, and almost any other art program that uses layers.

Pull the image into your selected program. Create a new layer, and place it under the lineart layer.

Now, set the lineart layer to "multiply". You should be able to do this under the layer settings menu. If you are unsure, refer to the help file for your selected program!

Also, Julie Dillon has an excellent linework prep tutorial located here:

http://www.cablenet.ne.jp/%7ejapanime/tutorial/cg1.html

It takes more work, but is useful for coloring the lines themselves, if you so choose.

I hope this helps out some of you! I look forward to more linework and more coloring!

There's another way to prepare linework that I've found a bit faster/easier (channels confuse me a bit) for anyone who wants an alternate method (just scroll down to section 4): http://www.chelseabrown.net/tut_linework.html

Anyway, these look awesome so far. I definitely have to color something at some point.

Yaniv's awesome kappa pic got to be the first pic I christened with my new drawing tablet. Woo!

Such a fun character to colour. I painted this all on one layer in OpenCanvas 4.
